FinOps consultant: when to bring in an expert, and how to choose one

A FinOps consultant helps you take back control of the cloud bill: make costs visible, find savings, get them applied and set up lasting governance. Here is when it helps, what to expect, and how to choose.

What a FinOps consultant does

FinOps brings finance, IT and engineering together around one goal: spending right. A FinOps consultant provides the tooling and runs this practice. In practice:

  • Making costs visible: tying every euro to an application and its owner, in a dashboard refreshed daily.
  • Finding savings: reservations and savings plans, rightsizing, Stop/Start, logs, storage, data services, re-architecture of the most expensive services.
  • Getting them applied with the teams, and measuring them on the bill.
  • Setting up governance that makes FinOps by design, so waste doesn't come back.

When to hire a FinOps consultant

  • The bill keeps rising without a clear explanation. At 5% a month, it grows by 80% in a year.
  • Nobody owns the costs: no FinOps team, no owner per application.
  • A deadline is coming: cloud migration, commitment renewal (MACC, EDP), next year's budget.
  • AI is arriving, with per-token billing that is hard to predict.
  • A cost incident just happened, and you want to avoid the next one.

What you should get in 30 and 90 days

30 daysRead-only access, cost mapping by application, top 10 services analyzed, first quick wins applied
90 daysA quantified remediation plan across all services, savings measured on the bill, budget alerts and forecast in place

Firm, independent or tool?

Questions to ask before choosing

  1. Are the announced savings measured on the bill, or estimated?
  2. What is the method, and how are recommendations built (real metrics, rules validated with IT)?
  3. Who applies the optimizations, and who carries the risk?
  4. What is the pricing model: on results, day rate, fixed price?
  5. What will remain after the engagement: dashboard, governance, autonomous teams?

How we work

Eight years of FinOps engagements, from SMEs to CAC 40 groups, over €20M in savings measured on the bill, a method co-built within the CRIP. Two offers: paid on results for SMEs, day-rate support for large enterprises. Details on the Offers page and in our approach.

FAQ

How much does a FinOps consultant cost?

It depends on the model. For SMEs, we are paid 20% of the annual savings achieved, charged once. For large enterprises, support is billed at a day rate, on quote. In both cases, the engagement pays for itself in less than 3 months of savings.

What is the difference between a FinOps consultant and a FinOps tool?

A tool provides visibility and generic recommendations. A consultant gets optimizations applied with your teams, adapts rules to your context and sets up lasting governance.

How long does a FinOps engagement last?

The first results come within a few weeks. Full support, up to governance and FinOps by design, usually runs over several months.

Do we need to grant access to our environments?

Read-only access (Reader) to billing and metrics is enough. Nothing is changed without your teams' approval.

First conversation

How much are you losing every month on a poorly optimized cloud?

SMEs: we are paid 20% of the annual savings achieved. Large enterprises: day-rate engagement. A first 30-minute conversation, no commitment.
